Three generations on one mountain.Tres generaciones en una misma montaña.

A grandfather who bought high land. A son who planted vines on it when everyone said not to. Two daughters and a mother who run it today. This is how a family ends up making serious wine at almost 7,000 feet.

The landLa tierra

In the 1970s Eduardo's father bought a piece of land in the Sacramento Mountains, near Cloudcroft in Otero County. High desert, almost 7,000 feet up, about twenty minutes from Alamogordo. He was not thinking about wine. It was mountain land, and it was theirs.

It is still the same land. The vines you see today, the tasting room, the terrace where Eduardo sits most afternoons: all of it is on the ground his father bought. When we say three generations on the land, we mean it exactly.

The altitude is the whole story. It is what made people say wine could not be made here, and it is what makes the wine taste like nowhere else. We did not choose the easy place. We chose ours.

"My father bought this land in the seventies. He wasn't thinking about grapes. It was high and it was dry and it was ours, and that was enough for him. I was the one who got the idea."

"In 1982 I put the first vines in. I remember what people said, because they said it a lot: New Mexico can't make serious wine. Too high. Too far from anywhere. Some said it kindly, like they were saving me money. Some didn't bother being kind. I didn't argue with any of them. I planted."

"People ask me for the secret and there isn't one. We are at almost 7,000 feet. The vines have to work for it, and so do we. We just farm it carefully. Every year, every row. That's the whole method."

"The turning point wasn't a medal. It was the first time somebody who didn't know us tasted the wine and went quiet for a second. You could see them changing their mind. The silver medal for the sparkling came later, and I was proud of it, but I'd already seen that look on people's faces enough times to know."

"Now it's my daughters' turn. Camila runs the tasting room and she is better with people than I ever was. Lucia makes the wine, and she's better at that than I was too. Rosa keeps all of us honest, including me. I'm stepping back, which mostly means I sit on the terrace and tell the story to anyone who'll listen."

"So come up. Sit down. Somebody will pour you a glass, and if it's me, you'll get the long version."

Estamos a casi 7,000 pies.

The elder daughter runs the tasting room and everything that touches a guest: the 45-minute tasting flight, the terrace, the harvest weekend and the release party, and the dozen or so small private gatherings we host each year. If you email the vineyard, Camila is who writes back.
