The landLa tierra

Almost 7,000 feet, and nobody's idea of wine country.

In the 1970s, Eduardo's father bought a piece of the Sacramento Mountains near Cloudcroft, in Otero County. High desert, at almost 7,000 feet. It was family land first, long before anyone thought of vines. Alto desierto, a casi 7,000 pies, unos 2,100 metros.

The altitude that made people doubt it is what we farm around now. Up here we grow Tempranillo, Cabernet Franc and Riesling, carefully, and the mountain is in every bottle.

Eduardo's chapter, in his own voiceEl capítulo de Eduardo, con su propia voz

“They said New Mexico couldn't make serious wine.”“Decían que en Nuevo México no se podía hacer vino serio.”

I planted the first vines in 1982. My father had bought this land in the seventies, and I wanted to see what it could do.

People told me, plainly, that New Mexico could not make serious wine. I decided the answer was not to argue but to farm, and to farm carefully. The wine would speak for itself or it would not.

Today my daughters run the vineyard, the winemaking and the tasting room, and I am stepping back. I still say what I said then: we just farm it carefully.

The welcome and the wine carry equal weight here. Camila looks after the first; Lucia makes the second.

An Albuquerque food writer called us a high desert surprise. We will take it, but we would rather you came up and decided for yourself.

Prove, with careful farming at altitude, that New Mexico makes serious wine, and share it the way a family shares its table.
